The Bohol Ubi Growers Association (BUGA) has reiterated their formal request to the Provincial Government of Bohol (PGBh) to change the date of holding the Ubi Festival from every second week of January to every second week of December.
In their regular meeting of the Board of Directors of BUGA held at the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist (OPA), Dao, Tagbilaran City last March 7, 2018 presided over by Floriano Gamay, Board of Directors (BODs) – chairman they passed a Resolution No. 02 series of 2018 citing some reasons why they asked that the Ubi Fest be conducted in December.
The farmers group head said December is the harvesting season of the planted Ubi which the Ubi growers have felt difficult of preserving the same and to be displayed during the festival because the harvested Ubi tubers could have been consumed during Christmas and New Year’s celebrations;
The bidding processes and the issuance of Notice to Proceed (NTP) which are needed to release the funds have already been prepared during the first semester of the year, thus holding a celebration in December is not anymore a problem.
Gamay said the 105 strong members of the association understand that the PGBh through the OPA could hardly secure funds to be used in the festival in January because the bidding process for the supplies, materials and catering services could not yet be prepared.
The PGBh has an existing ordinance stating that the Ubi Festival should be conducted on every 2nd week of January.
According to Gamay based on their experiences that sometimes the schedules could not be followed like what was happened last Ubi Fest that the celebration was conducted on February 20-22, 2018.
He said the presidents of the different Ubi growers associations from the Ubi growing municipalities in Bohol during the consultation facilitated by the OPA affixed their signatures in favor to change the date of conducting the Ubi Festival from every second week of January to second week of December of every year.
