Police get new leads on US man killing

The police said they have new leads in relation to the killing of a retired US serviceman killed several weeks ago in Baclayon town.

In a text message to the Tribune on Saturday, Bohol police director Sr. Supt. Angeles Geñorga Jr., said they are in possession of leads and other vital information that can help solve the crime that happened several Sundays ago.

Retired US serviceman Lonnie Lonnie Scott Weig was gunned down in broad daylight and sent shockwaves not just in Baclayon town, but throughout Bohol as well.

However, he did not divulge the information they have in detail.

Geñorga said they are also awaiting the forensic investigation report in relation to the crime. Earlier, the provincial director promised for a more in-depth investigation to solve the killing of the retired serviceman.

Lalaliman pa natin ang imbestigasyon,” (We will deepen the investigation) said Geñorga.

The special team has been pursuing several angles to learn more about the motive behind the killing of the retired American service man.

Prior to the killing, the American was having a jog in a secluded area in barangay Laya in Baclayon town.

He was gunned down by still unidentified gunmen, reports said.

The case is the first major one that Geñorga faced as he assumed office back in January 15.

Bohol Gov. Edgar Chatto earlier directed Geñorga to handle the case and dig deeper into the mystery about the murder of the retired American serviceman.

Chatto said isolated incidents such as this case may cause a smear in the tourism-friendly image of the province.

The police earlier manifested the case can be tough to solve, as finding a motive for the killing, can be likened to finding needle in the haystack.

Until now, the police have yet to determine the identity of the suspect, much more the motive behind the killing.

Weig, who was originally from North Dakota, married a Boholana and switched his residence from the United States of America (USA) to the Philippines.

He jogs regularly and it comes as a shock to the community what happened to him last month.

Neighbors attest the man was kind and accommodating. It has been a puzzle to some why he was killed in such a manner.

The neighbors further added the man had no known enemies that could become suspects to his murder.

The victim, while he was still alive, was mild-mannered and accommodating to his neighbors.

The police said the victim sustained a gunshot wound on the nape and at the right side of the body.

The gunshot wounds caused his instant death, reports said.

Authorities earlier said there were no spent bullet casings found near the crime scene.

The police reported they have started a follow-up operation on the matter by taking some accounts from the witnesses.

Witnesses said the perpetrators were riding a motorcycle and used the same to go scot-free after the murder.

The Scene of the Crime Operatives had processed the crime scene to look for potential clue that can help solve the murder.

The police also conducted an investigation at the house and interviewed family members and neighbors of the victim to learn about the possible motive behind the murder. (DSA)
