Forty three couples exchanged their vows last February 28 at the function hall of the new administrative building, Potohan, Tubigon as part of the service of the town government to its constituents.
After years of being together, they are now legally married as husband and wife at the expense of the local government unit. The couples’ wedding was officiated by Municipal Mayor William R. Jao.
The mass wedding was made possible thru the efforts of the Local Civil Registry Office headed by Ma. Grace P. Reserva.
It is prevalent in today’s society that marriage is out of the context. Most couples men and women prefer to live together out of wedlock raising illegitimate children and forget about the sanctity of marriage. Maybe the financial aspect would a great barrier to have a legitimate union.
February was declared by the national government as the “Civil Registration Month” thru Proclamation No. 682 duly signed by the late President Corazon C. Aquino on January 28, 1991. The LCR office came up an idea to hold a mass wedding appropriate for this occasion to minimize children born out of wedlock. The payment of all the documentary requirements were all shouldered by local government from the marriage license, birth certificate, certificate of no marriage and all other paper works. All they have to do was to apply at the office on a first come first serve basis because of a scarce funding. The budget was only limited to 43 couples.
