SU turns over ‘calamity smart’ church to Bohol

Officials from Silliman University (SU) turned over on July 2 a “calamity-smart” church that can stand the challenges of typhoones and strong earthquake in Catigbian town.

The United Church of Christ in the Philippines-Bohol Conference Incorporated (UCCP-Bohol) invited Gov. Edgar M. Chatto and Catigbian Mayor Virgilio Lurot for the Inauguration and Turnover Ceremony of their Calamity-Resilient Church in Poblacion, Catigbian.

Conference Minister Rev. Edwin Golosino and Church Pastor Rev. Berdido Polbos led its whole Visayas Jurisdiction members in welcoming Catigbianons and guests and the SU faculty led by University President Dr. Ben S. Malayang III and his wife who happens to be a Boholana.

Chatto said “this is not an accident but God’s plan that we would be gathered here today.”
The 2013 earthquake has destroyed 16 UCCP churches in Bohol and it’s been the members’ dream to rebuild their churches here.

Chatto believes that as long as we hold God’s hands, we have nothing to fear; that when calamities strike, other opportunities open for God’s people. When God closes a door, He opens several windows. He urged the people to thank God always for “He won’t give us problems too heavy for us to carry.”
