National Artist Virgilio Almario lauded on Saturday the love of former President Carlos P. Garcia for the motherland expressed through his “balak” or Cebuano lyric poetry.
Bohol celebrated on Saturday the annual commemoration of the birth anniversary of President Garcia, known as the most illustrious son of Bohol.
The ninth president of the Republic, Garcia remains to be one of the most loved and respected statesman in Bohol being one of three Presidents of the Republic hailing from the Visayas.
Almario was one of the guest speakers during the annual CPG Day celebrations held at the Bohol Cultural Center here.
The chairman of the National Commission on Culture and the Arts talked about how Garcia showed his passion for his country through his poetry.
However, not all of the former president’s poems or balak were ever recorded since most of the time they were oral and done impromptu.
Balak is the general Cebuano term for poetry.
Known as the “Balak” beauty and the Bard from Bohol, Garcia has been known to deliver poems integrated in his speeches.
Since portable recording devices were not present during Garcia’s time it made impossible to immortalize the words of the Great Boholano statesman, said Almario.
One of Garcia’s poems was taken as an example to show how deep was Garcia’s love to the motherland.
Almario said Garcia was one of the finest nationalist, whose fervor and love to the motherland had no equal.
The National Artist also recognized the rich artistic culture of Bohol, showing the heritage of the province being well and alive.
