Bohol romps away with most awards in Nutrition Congress

Bohol is the biggest winner after romping away with the most number of awards during the 13th Regional Nutrition Action Officer (NAO) Congress held at Cebu City on Friday. The awards solidify the claim of the province to be a force to reckon with in terms of nutrition-related programs.

This year’s theme, “Nutrisyon Atong Obligasyon: NAO and Always,” highlights the important roles that NAOs play in managing the nutrition program in their respective LGUs, particularly in ensuring the implementation of the Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition (PPAN) 2017-2022 and a call for them to be pro-active in coordinating with the different sectors in the community for nutrition improvement.

Now on its 13th year, the event was conducted in tandem with the Central Visayas 2017 Grand Nutrition Awards and the Pabasa sa Nutrisyon Awards of the Nutrition Center of the Philippines which was celebrating its 43rd anniversary.

Team Bohol, led by Gov. Edgar Chatto, proudly paraded down the aisle of the Mezzo Hotel in Cebu City Friday and took the opportunity to pose for pictures in the name of posterity during the event and during the awarding ceremonies.

This year’s awardees were, for Outstanding Pabasa Awards: Bohol Province, Tagbilaran City, and the municipalities of Alburquerque, Antequera, Bilar, Buenavista, Calape, Clarin, Cortes, Corella, Dagohoy, Guindulman, Inabanga, Maribojoc and San Isidro.

For the Exemplary Pabasa Awards, the awardees are the towns of Talibon and San Miguel.

The municipalities of Batuan, Mabini, Sierra Bullones and Trinidad got the coveted Hall of Fame Pabasa Awards.

Barangay Mayana of Jagna was given the Outstanding Barangay in the Province of Bohol and consequently, became the 2nd runner up, for the Search for Outstanding Barangay in the Region.

Barangay Poblacion 1 was handed the Outstanding Barangay in the City of Tagbilaran and 1st runner up for the Search for Outstanding Barangay in the Region.

Under the Green Banner Awards, the Municipality of Carmen got the Outstanding Municipality in the Province of Bohol and in Region 7; and in the process, its chief executive, Mayor Ricardo A. Toribio, was given the opportunity as one of the responders for the awards given to local government units (LGUs).

Nemesia L. Lanit, to every Boholano’s delight and pride who graced the ceremonies, got the accolade as the Regional Outstanding Barangay Nutrition Scholar (BNS), who, like Toribio before her, got the opportunity to respond to the award given, not only on her behalf, but also in behalf of all Boholanos, including the governor.

Bohol province’s Outstanding Pabasa Award was in recognition of its achievement in the implementation of the Pabasa Nutrition Program.

One of the highlights of its Technical Session which really got the audience’s attention due to its very controversial content was the lecture from Erlinda P. Binghay, Nutrition Specialist of Cebu Velez General Hospital.

Binghay nonchalantly included in her powerpoint presentation well-known products which, she swore, are very detrimental to everyone’s health which got the whole session hall abuzz with speculation, intrigue and excitement.

Regional Director Jaime S. Bernadas of the Department of Health (DOH-7), who is the Regional Nutrition Committee Chair, introduced the guests, Presidential Adviser for the Visayas USec Michael Lloyd L. Dino, and Dr. Florentino S. Solon, president emeritus, Nutrition Center of the Philippines.

The Good Nutrition Practice and Project Awards were given to Naga City, for its Ulirang Ina sa City of Naga; and Bais City, for Munting Gulayan Alay sa Kalusugan ng Kabataan.

Aside from those mentioned earlier, other Outstanding Pabasa Awardees are Sto. Tomas and Rosario of La Union, Quirino Province, the LGUs of Aglipay, Cabarroguis, Diffun, Nagtiouan and Saguday of Quirino; Paro, Cebu; and Pamplona, Negros Oriental.

Barangay Poblacion, Siquijor, Siquijor got the Outstanding Barangay in the Province of Siquijor; while barangay Maribago, Lapu-lapu City was given the Outstanding Barangay in the City of Lapu-lapu and in the Region; while incidentally, Lapu-lapu City was named Outstanding City in the Region.

One very important point which Chatto lauded and was very proud of during the ceremonies, was the distribution of leaflets, which included the Province of Bohol’s very own FAITH: Food Always In The Home, referring to the program as a food security project for families, schools and communities.

As Chatto always reiterates in his speeches, “awards are just ‘incidentals’ to the good deeds that we do” but just the same, he admits that he is very proud of his “children’s” achievements and he would never get tired of pushing Bohol to greater heights. (Janet Villarojo/Edcom)
