9th Bohol heart medical mission eyes to serve underprivileged

Underprivileged ailing heart patients from the province of Bohol and other parts of the Philippines are very fortunate and in high spirits as they gear up for the free major Heart Surgical Mission slated from September 9-15, 2017 at the Borja Family Hospital.

With the cooperation of the hospital leadershipunder Medical Director Dr. Melinda Borja and Hospital Administrator Dr. Pepe Borja,impoverished heart patients will be able to get top-notch medical care.

This year’s major heart surgical event, which would provide a new lease on the lives of the heart patient-beneficiaries thru the life-changing free surgeries, is mainly sponsored by the Provincial Government of Bohol thru Gov. Edgar M. Chatto, Vice Gov. Dionisio D. Balite, Acting Provincial Administrator Atty. Mitchell John Boiser, Governor’s Office Health Cluster Head Dr. Cesar Tomas M. Lopez and Provincial Health Officer Dr. Reymoses A. Cabagnot.

This free heart mission is being coordinated by the Philippine Gift of Life Foundation thru Chairman Dr. Ramie Cadag, President/CEO Mrs. Fancy S. Baluyot and Vice President Rev. Fr. Victor G. Bompat, and supported by Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office under PCSO Chairman Hon. Jose Jorge E. Corpuz and the City Government of Tagbilaran under Honorable Mayor John Geesnell L. Yap II, Vice Mayor Jose Antonio S. Veloso and Tagbilaran City Administrator Leonides L. Borja.

It is also being supported by the Home-Reach Foundation, Inc. thru Chairman Dr. PepeRecitas and Co-Chairman Dr. Ramie Cadag; Department of Health under Secretary of Health Dr. Paulyn Jean B. Rosell-Ubial and Undersecretary Dr. Elmer G. Punzalan; First Consolidated Bank thru Chairman Emeritus Mr. Richard Uy; Rotary Club of Tagbilaran under President Rodolfo Pedralba and by the three honorable congressmen of Bohol – Cong. Rene Relampagos, Cong. Erico Aristotle C. Aumentado and Cong. Arthur Yap. Other donor-sponsors will be published after the completion of the surgical mission.

This forthcoming heart mission here in Bohol is spearheaded by a 33-member surgical team mainly composed of topnotch thoracic surgeons, expert cardiologists, and highly experienced OR nurses and perfusionists from the Philippine Heart Center spearheaded by its Director Dr. Joel M. Abanilla and from the Heart Foundation of the Philippines under Chairman Dr. Avenilo P. Aventura, Sr. and President Gen. Emiliano D. Temploand the Philippine Gift of Life Foundation led by adult cardiologist Dr. Kazan S. Baluyot and pediatric cardiologistDr. Julia Maape.

The surgical delegation led by team leader Dr. Florante Lomibao and Dr. Ma. Bernadette Azcueta will be arriving here in Bohol via a Philippine Airlines flight direct from Manila and they will be greeted at the Tagbilaran City Airport by a welcoming group from the Provincial Government of Bohol led by Gov. Edgar M. Chatto and from the Philippine Gift of Life led by its President / CEO Mrs. Fancy S. Baluyot.

The aforesaid mission’s surgical equipment and the technicians are expected to be airlifted from Manila aboard a Philippine Air Force C-130 plane just prior to the start date of the mission.

These free major heart missions in the Philippines – all done here in Tagbilaran City, Bohol, is the 9thedition of its kind after the first previous 8 successful missions in the years 2003 to 2015, is set to benefit a total of 40 patients who will be operated for free during the mission days at the Borja Family Hospital to be performed by the country’s leading cardiovascular and thoracic surgeons.

Of the 40 patients to be operated here during the week-longmission dates, the youngest is 4-month-old baby boy from Maribojoc, Bohol and the oldest patient is a 36-year-old man fromPanglao, Bohol. Aside from the patients coming from various parts of Bohol, the mission also have patient beneficiaries coming from Negros Occidental, San Jose Quezon, Bukidnon and Taguilon, Dapitan City. One heart operation costs from P600,000 to P2million if paid, but will be free during the said heart mission thanks to the unrelenting coordinative efforts of the Philippine Gift of Life Foundation.

The sodium bicarbonate vials, the mission’s most essentially important surgical medicine, have to be imported from the U.S. due to its global supply shortage, and thanks to the Home-Reach Foundation, Inc. and Mt. Sinai Hospital in Manhattan, New York who donated the vials, and to the Bishop of the Diocese of Talibon – Most Rev. Patrick Daniel Y. Parcon for hand-carrying the donated sodium bicarbonate vials from New York just in time for their necessary use during the heart mission here.

The Philippine Gift of Life Board of Trustees, apart from the top officials already named above, is composed of Mr. Peter Dejaresco as Corporate Secretary; Engr. Albert Uy as Treasurer; Mr. Benjamin Ong as Auditor; Dr. Florante Lomibao as Chief Consultant; Governor Edgar M. Chatto as Adviser; Directors – Dr. Mary Ann Ruiz, Mr. Richard Uy, Mr. Joseph Alagon, Dr. Pepe Recitas, Ms. Cates Climaco, Mr. Toto Jabonillo, Dr. Edgar Lerias, and Engr. Victor Bantol.
